This is a list of frequently asked questions on the PTR. Information here is updated as often as possible, and new threads should not be created to inquire about these topics.
1. What is the current version of the PTR?
- 0.3.0.10522
2. Will there be premade characters available for this testing phase?
- Premade characters will be available to copy to the PTR for this phase of testing.
- To copy over a premade character, please visit http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/charcopy/character-copy.html
- There are four available character copies per account, there are currently no plans to add more.
3. Where can I read the latest PTR patch notes?
- PTR patch notes will either be available on this forum, or at the following link:
4. I have copied a character over to the PTR, but it is not showing up on the server. Why?
- Characters copied to the PTR are put into a queue with everyone else that is trying to copy characters over. This queue can grow quite large, and extend the time that it takes to transfer characters over. Please check the character transfer status, if it says "pending" then your character is still in queue to be transferred.
- If your character is transfered successfully, but is not showing on the server still, please copy another character over. We will be unable to deal with character copy issues on an individual basis.
5. When I try to log into the PTR realm, it says my username and password are wrong, what do I do?
- Your PTR login may not directly reflect what your login is for live servers. The login information used for the PTR is separate from live, and is typically cached from several weeks prior to the PTR becoming available.
- What you should do: Please try any current or old passwords when trying to access the PTR. If you have converted to a Battle.net account, please try both your battle.net login, and your previous logins.
- If you previously had an authenticator on your account, and have removed it, you may still need to use the authenticator to access the PTR.
- If after all of the above options you are still unable to access the PTR, you will have to wait until the next testing phase to try again. We will be unable to deal with PTR login issues on an individual basis.
PTR Installation
- 1. Obtain the PTR downloader from http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/charcopy/downloads.html
- 2. Run the downloader file (WoW-3.0.1.8874-PTR-US-Installer-downloader)
- 3. After the downloader has completed downloading "3.0.1.8874 US PTR Installer" open that folder and run "Blizzard Updater.exe"
- 4. Choose any location with enough space to install the PTR client onto (12-15gb free space)
- 5. The installer will create install the PTR and allow you to start the patching process.
- 6. Once the PTR is installed, run the Launcher.exe file to make sure that your client is up to date.
If your patch halts at any point with the message "Waiting for files to close" please close all open updater and patch windows and run the patch manually from the folder it was downloaded to.
Locked characters on the PTR
- Players that have updated their accounts to Wrath of the Lich King within the past few months may not be able to access some characters after copying them to the PTR servers. This includes premade characters.
- If you are receiving the error "Character Locked - Contact Billing" when trying to log into the PTR, you will not be able to access that character during this testing phase.
- Thank you for your interest in participating in the PTR, we hope to see you during the next testing phase.
Please understand that while we would like for you to be able to participate in the PTR, we will be unable to handle issues with locked characters on the PTR on an individual basis.
New threads created regarding locked characters will be deleted.

I've added a short section that details how to report players on the PTR for exploiting or hacking. Please see section 6 of the above FAQ for instructions on how to report players that may be abusing the PTR.
6. I've witnessed other players abusing the PTR with hacks or exploits, how do I report them?
- Please do not report these players here on the forum, instead please visit the following site to report the players directly to Customer Support.
- Once you arrive to the site, please select "World of Warcraft" and "Hacks, Cheats, and Exploits".
- When selecting your realm, please select "Other" and type the PTR server name that you're on.
