More 3.0.8 PTR Details: Build 9438

Thanks to community members Venida and Elppa for spending time on the 3.0.8 PTR and uploading these images!

Blue Posts

Arena Point Cap

We understand the problem and will likely bump the cap. Look for an announcement soon.

Gotta Go! In 3.0.8

Gotta Go = 4 minutes
Volazj's Quick Demise = no change

Concerted Efforts Change

Concerted Efforts should include 1 of all BG marks, not just 4/5. Meaning, you turn in 1 of AV, AB, EOTS, WSG, SOTA marks

We plan to do this in a future patch.

Alterac Valley Honor Rewards

We'll have to wait and see if we feel it's necessary to increase the amount of honor earned or add these levels of items.

40 Exalted Reputations Achievement

We are aware of the text being a little confusing on this, but right now it is setup to have x amount of exalted factions at the same time. We may change how this works at some point in the future but have no definite plans at this time.

Frost Presence Hotfix

We are looking into this issue and found one bug that we are hotfixing.

I will attempt to explain:

Most auras go away when you die, but some don't. Frost Presence and Defensive Stance have some effects that go away and some that do not (this is the bug). It ends up that a DK who dies loses some of the threat bonus from Frost Presence, but doesn't get it back when he comes back to life because the game thinks Frost Presence is still active and doesn't attempt to reapply the buff. If you change presence from Frost to something else and back, then all the buffs get reapplied correctly, but most tanks probably aren't doing that.

So it's entirely possible that if you die and come back without changing presences that you have just gimped your threat generation. You aren't losing all your bonus threat generation. You are basically losing the amount that we gave all tanks to compensate for pulling Blessing of Salvation out of the game.

If all of that confuses you, the take home message is we fixed a bug where your threat would be low after dying. Again, by the time you read this, the bug should have been hotfixed.

It is likely this bug was also affecting warriors in Defensive Stance and the hotfix will catch that too. It was not affecting paladins or druids because their spells work differently.

We don't know if this is the entire issue with DK (and possibly warrior) threat being low, but it should help, especially if you ever die while raiding. Some of the guilds who are seeing this problem have very high dps, which implies they have experienced the content a lot and might not be dying that much.

Improved Fairie Fire

I went ahead and looked at this in game, and I am happy to report that I was wrong. Any Faerie Fire should allow you to get the 3% crit, even if you didn't cast it.

So the tooltip should probably read:

Your Faerie Fire and Feral Faerie Fire spells also increase the chance the target will be hit by spell attacks by 3%, and increase the critical strike chance of your damage spells by 3% on targets afflicted by [anyone's] Faerie Fire or Feral Faerie Fire.

I don't always have the game right in front of me when I am reading forums (most often I am on a painfully topical beach sipping mai tais) so I try not to guess unless I am pretty sure about something. I was pretty sure about this, but I was wrong. It happens. There are like 15,000 spells in the game.

Hunter Damage: Player Data vs. Dev Data

Players generally do a great job generating numbers with what they have. They don't always have the most up to date numbers, and we don't make a herculean effort to get numbers to them. PTRs are our best shot, but even they can lag behind our most current builds.

As a most recent example, Elemental shamans were perplexed by why their numbers were different from ours and there was some amount of shouting that we didn't know what we were talking about and why couldn't we just accept the community's numbers and balance around those? It turned out that the shamans had misunderstood the way a talent worked (almost certainly because of unclear statements on my part) and that when they were able to test on the PTR, their numbers were close to what we predicted. Happy ending.

I don't know know why the EJ hunter numbers you cited don't match ours. It would take a great deal of time for us to dig through all the numbers that we are presented with to understand where the disagreements occur. In this case I suspect it is because Explosive Shot does less damage now than it does on the PTR, but I don't know. Survival is a miniscule percentage of total hunters out there, so we really won't mind them getting a significant bump, but it isn't our intent that they are far and away the highest dps hunter spec (BM shouldn't be either).

We do our tests under a variety of conditions, and fully raid buffed is certainly one of them.

The Ulduar comment I made has been widely mininterpreted, but I made it because so many players were using the argument "We may be okay now, but we won't scale." While some players understand "scaling" perfectly well, it also gets thrown around a lot by less-informed players as the generic reason for why something fails ("RNG" occupies that niche on the PvP side of things sometimes). In the hunter case, it may be that they do scale just fine but it is irrelevant because we are rebalancing hunters for 3.1.

Defensive Stance Hotfix

This thead has gone pretty far afield, but I did want to mention that we hotfixed a bug where warrior threat in Def Stance would sometimes be lower following a death. Basically, the threat modifier was not being reapplied properly until you changed stances.

We don't imagine this was a huge issue in threat generation but there were certainly cases where it cropped up.

Windows 7 Beta Now Available

While not entirely World of Warcraft related, I know many of you are likely as disappointed as I am in Windows Vista.  Well, there's good news if you are.  The Windows 7 beta was made public yesterday by Microsoft -- opening up 2.5 million keys -- so if you're using Vista and want to beta test Windows 7 instead, you can.  I've been using it pretty much since it became available yesterday, and there are some really cool features compared to Vista.  It's also performing much better so far.

However, as with any Beta software, there are chances your PC will crash when running it or some applications may not run properly, so if you want a stable Operating System then stick to your current for now.  But if you do want to check out the improvements for yourself, you'll have until August 1st, 2009 to use the current version of Windows 7.

Useful Windows 7 Links

Screenshots

And of course, some screenshots for you to take a look at.  If there's enough interest, I'll look into posting more.

It seems that way to me as well.
But I have one major issue and I am thinking it is probably something very simple.
I installed Windows 7 on a different partition from XP and I am playing WoW from the XP partition. I can load up WoW just fine while in 7 but I have no access to any of my addons!

Anyone else have this issue and if so what can I do to fix it?

"Gotta Go" still hasn't been confirmed as changed in 3.0.8

Only the timer change, and a "future patch" and thus far it's the same on the PTR. 2 minutes.

To talk about something else than windows 7, the arena points cap. Its good to see a raise in the cap, but i would love an higher cap in honor points aswell.

I mean 4 minutes??? Completly removes the point of doing the achievement. Yes 2 minutes was too sharp & required a retarded setup but they could've gone for 2'15" or 2'30"...

I have been keeping up with the 3.0.8 updates, but i haven't seen these changes announced.

Flow of Knowledge - Crit change has been changed to resilience
Posted Image

Wintergrasp Commendation - On live it costs 30 Stone Keeper Shards
The PTR 3.0.8 shows it as 9 wintergrasp marks. Better grab them now.

This change is in the notes somewhere -- it's not a bug or an oversight.

Tech Support's Windows 7 + Wow thread:
http://forums.worldo...287258768&sid=1

Users are reporting upwards of a 20% increase to fps, even with beta drivers.

As to only being able to upgrade from Vista, its true. However, you shouldn't be upgrading your real copy of Vista, unless you're going to be paying the $200 down the road when 7 goes live to purchase it.

Create a partition, and install 7 on that partition. When the beta's over, format the drive with 7, and merge it back into your other OS's drive.

Actually it could be a bug as it was said it could also be bought for 9 marks alongside 30 stones.

Wow... System requirements.

1ghz CPU

1GB Ram

16GB HHD Space

Good. I don't care if it takes HHD space, or a gig of ram. Vista's 2GB requirement for RAM was retarded and HHD space is cheap.

What really excites me is the 1ghz CPU requirement. Vista recomends a duel core. Especially since WoW is such a CPU hog. XP and Vista are both taxing on system resources enough to make WoW crawl in any major city.

I'm actually looking forward to this OS.

First time since XP SP2 was announced.

Thanks for noticing the Flow of Knowledge change! I figured it being crit rather than resilience was a bug, especially since it had the same value of crit as the Anvil of the Titans had for resilience.

As for the Commendation, are you saying it can only be purchased with Wintergrasp Marks of Honor now? If so the patch notes are incorrect because it says:

Quote

Wintergrasp Commendations can now also be purchased for the low low price of 9 Wintergrasp Marks of Honor. Players can visit their respective Wintergrasp vendors and put those Marks of Honor to use!

Agreed. First thing I noticed was the minimum requirements; that alone told me this OS is going to be leaps and bounds better than Vista. ;)

Does it tell you the exact errors? Like, is it a javascript error or otherwise?

I noticed some issues with the gallery, but that may be a vbulletin bug we'll have to look into rather than the website.

That said, a lot of the javascript and ajax will be going away soon (especially on the main page).
