Well, it definitely didn't take 30 seconds to make and I agree that their current logo is actually very nice and perhaps the one I made isn't impeccable, perfect or anything of the sort but I did put effort into it, so I think it's really exaggerated to say that it would devalue the site or that it's utterly ugly. >.<

But, heh, I guess everyone's entitled to their opinion. Anyhow, I can't go to BlizzCon so I'll probably gift it to a friend so to those of you who so strongly oppose my work, you'll be happy to know I won't be receiving the prize. lol xD

Grats on the win, I really like the font you used.

I kind of wish I had time to make an entry.

Also, I would have picked SgtWikez's concept out of the two, having not seen the rest of the entries. However, not always agreeing with a client's decisions and/or taste is part of working in the field.

The biggest issue is probably that this new logo is incredibly similar to the one in use now, but not as clean. I won't go so far as to "sling mud," but wouldn't the point of changing logos be to move in a different, more imaginative direction?

I'm glad Kody stands by his logo choice (he should).

Though, everyone is entitled to their opinion, mine being that the winning logo was seemingly chosen based on the neat font used. The whole thing just doesn't look professional to me at all =/

Also, not everyone here is slinging mud... some simply stated they disliked the winning logo. It's an opinion; it's allowed -- just like WoR's decision to choose it as the winning logo.

To me, Gaikai just looks like a stripped version of OnLive tbh. Also notice how he's limiting his mouse movements within world of warcaft to only the video frame, even when he's using his mouse to look around?

not impressed at all i'm afraid.

Overall a fairly well done logo. A few points of comment.

1. It does have an overall aesthetic flow. The style of the piece behind the lettering matches the same style as the lettering.
2. The color scheme used matches well with current site design.
3. The use of glow on the lettering coming from ~300 degrees is nice. (i'm not sure if the was intended or a color change or compression issue... worked out well not the less)
4. (more of a counterpoint to previous comments) the extra yellow/orange pixels in the image could have been a transparency problem in getting it ready for posting on the site. It could have also been a compression issue also, like previously stated.
5. My only dislike in the logo is a lack of texture on the object containing the map, the shape is pretty good. but it seems very flat and plain. The bevel of course helps, but an object that is only beveled... well, it can definitely bring down the amount of interest in the image. A simple texture on it, or perhaps some added shaping inside it could help.
6. another idea with the image that may be neat, is to see how that style of font would look in other languages. WoW is a pretty widely international game. Getting WoR international may not be on the agenda or horizon, but having options is always nice.

Also blizzard hating on awesome new hunter pets makes me a saaad panda... RIP spirit wolf :-(

I would have entered, had a pretty cool idea. But i already have my blizzcon tickets so there wasn't much point.

Looks like he probably used a copywritten font (+0 for originality)

The font is Dark Crystal Script, which some of you may know because it's the font used in Disgaea for the title, and for the older people out there, it also was used originally for the Dark Crystal, the 1982 Jim Henson movie.

Awesome work, this belongs in a commercial avenue for sure.

I feel the winning submission is a downright insult to folks like SgtWikez who actually has a creative mind and not some random mishmash that looks like it was made by someone who just very recently picked up photoshop.

Anyone who's done some real design/logo work before knows that there are a couple of rules to follow when doing a logo:

  • It should be simple, and use as few colors as possible.
  • It should be easily recognizable.
  • It should work just as good in black/white as in colors.
  • It should be scale-able, and should look just as good with a height of 100px as with a height of 1000px.
  • It should not be made in Photoshop, because Photoshop uses pixels. You should use Illustrator since it uses vector and allows it to scale without distorting it.
  • It should be timeless. You shouldn't use any of the new "trends", then it will be old next year.

I might have forgotten some stuff, but you get the point.
I don't see have the winner logo follows any of those rules.

I, too, liked your logo SgtWikez. I guess i won't mind the winner because I like the font used. The background thing feels clumsy tho, but it might be solvable I guess

agreed. A logo that you may not like was chosen. I put mine in very early and I thought it looked great (idk what Kody thought) but it didn't win. No skin off my nose. I really want to go to Blizzcon with my friend anyway.

I can't understand the logo choice here...I'm not going to knock the logo, because at a glance, it has potential. The font was a nice choice, and placement seems ok....but it needs serious work. The element in the back hast some technical flaws, as well as not being ascetically pleasing to the eye. I think with some work, It could be a great logo, but It just seems odd to choose one that would need work done, then one someone might have put more effort and thought.

I can confirm that u can get the worgen, I finished the q while lvling so cant get one myself, but saw 3 horde and 1 alliance taming the wolf when shifted into the worgen. They stayed worgen after taming. (I heard that entering arena makes him wolf again). There are many screenshots on the hunter section of the wow forums.

The winning logo will likely go through multiple iterations until it's actually used.

Why choose a logo that in your opinion isn't even ready to be used in it's "winning" form?? You guys chose a winner who just put "World of Raids" in the Dark Crystal font?

Hmm...

I didn't just put World of Raids into that font. And why are you making such a big deal on the font used anyways? SgtWikez's logo, which so many hailed as well-done, uses an extremely basic font. Yet that's deemed professional while my using of the Dark Crystal font is an utter insult to graphic designers everywhere?

The font was originally used in that movie title. So then, are the graphic artists of that video game's logo also unprofessional and unoriginal? I doubt every single logo uses its very own custom made font.

For those of you who criticize me based on using Photoshop as opposed to Illustrator, my apologies for not going out to purchase a program I don't have that costs well over 300 dollars. I did my best with what I had.

I mean, I know all of you are entitled to say your opinion on my logo, but at least make your complaints and criticisms valuable and legitimate. Extensively researching the font I used and then pointing out which program I used seems like a waste of your time. :/

Some of the people who posted their reasons why they don't like my design did so in an educated and helpful way. As a response, I reviewed my logo and fixed the afformentioned errors.

Cause a logo is supposed to use a simple clean font, this is like naming your character Sephiroth. I really doubt you bought Photoshop so the Illustrator argument is a bit funny. I wouldn't blame you though, these are really newbie photoshop things to do, slapping on a default bevel&emboss, using a font like that, a crappy shadow overlay, it's doable in 30 seconds and it's very easy to do and I think most people have done it at the start of their photoshopping adventures and you see it everywhere, but if someone has used photoshop even slightly, you can tell exactly what you've used, I could even tell the name of the font.

What's really funny however is how a professional site could pick this really unprofessional (no offense) logo to use and I really hope they don't change or pick something better like the one posted earlier or whatever, I didn't see the other entries or knew about the contest til I saw the logo on the frontpage.

Alright, the guy's logo isn't the worst out there - it is missing a lens flare or two after all.

However, lets just put the logos next to each other for a moment and just look at them for a few seconds. I mean seriously.

New logo

Current logo - nice, clean and simple. Perhaps a "full version" with some subtitle could be added to make sense to people not familiar with the site
Posted Image

Some other guy's logo - although admittedly it requires a pretty different site design than the current one

Hope this helps.

Merchant:

Yes, I didn't buy Photoshop, I found it next to a creek but the Illustrator was in the tree so I was too lazy to pick it. Apparently we don't buy things anymore. >.<

Vaoni:

See, that's helpful. It actually lets someone see what could be fixed. Both of your comments actually make sense and from a quick glance, I notice the error in pixels which I fixed and sent to the administrator's.
