World of Raids Logo Contest Winner

This was by far the hardest contest to judge yet on World of Raids, since it will usher in a new-look logo for the website. We had a number of incredible entries, but unfortunately only one could be chosen. I'm going to contact all of the entrants and get their permission to upload the logos they submitted, because while we can only use one, I think everyone would like to be able to appreciate the talent and creativity displayed. So, without further ado, I present to you the future logo for World of Raids:

Posted Image

Congratulations to 1217814 for winning the BlizzCon ticket prize for the contest! We won't be using the logo on the site just yet, but you can expect to see it later this summer, along with a few cool new things for World of Raids.

Worgen Hunter Pet

This might be hotfixed (or changed in an upcoming patch), but currently it's possible to have a worgen pet as a hunter! Well, a pet with a worgen model, anyway. According to Mania's Arcania, it's possible to tame Garwal from Howling Fjord, and if you time it right he'll keep his worgen form when he becomes your pet! The only caveat so far to keeping your pet in his worgen form is to not enter Arenas or Battlegrounds, as doing so will reset the pet to a wolf model. Unfortunately you won't be able to do this unless you've yet to complete Alpha Worg, and from the comments on Mania's Arcania, it looks like it's more challenging of a tame than the spirit wolf from Dustwallow Marsh.

Possible Battle.net 2 "Pay-to-play" Option

Quote from: Bashiok (Source)

Mike mentioned it in an Activision Blizzard investor meeting [paraphrased] "A player that buys Starcraft 2 at retail will have the ability to play on Battle.net with no additional fee."

I'll point out that this is a very carefully worded statement.

Ehm... Why bother changing the current logo to one that's less sophisticated, way more messy, downright ugly (okay that's a matter of taste). And what's up with that symbol? Looks like someone just found the innerbevel button or something :-)

If you're going to change logo, at least change it to one that's equal or better :P

How exactly is this logo "messy"? And I agree, the symbol does need a bit of work.

I made an account to let you know that that is an *utterly* horrible Photoshop. Looks like he probably used a copywritten font (+0 for originality) and he created a simple shape with a bevel effect on it on top of the old globe symbol. COME ON. That seriously would take me 30 seconds to do. Please don't make the mistake of adding that to your website. Every person that uses Photoshop will absolutely cringe when they see that. It will really devalue your site's image.

I agree for the most part. The current logo is great. It's simple and smooth.

I do like the font in the new logo, but whatever that symbol thing is at the top right.... get rid of it. It's unnecessary.

Well, it definitely didn't take 30 seconds to make and I agree that their current logo is actually very nice and perhaps the one I made isn't impeccable, perfect or anything of the sort but I did put effort into it, so I think it's really exaggerated to say that it would devalue the site or that it's utterly ugly. >.<

But, heh, I guess everyone's entitled to their opinion. Anyhow, I can't go to BlizzCon so I'll probably gift it to a friend so to those of you who so strongly oppose my work, you'll be happy to know I won't be receiving the prize. lol xD

Ok, the winning logo is legitimately horrible. I seriously call into question the the decision of this website's administrators. There are soooo many Photoshop errors in that monstrosity.

Let's go through the ones I can spot that make this logo truly cheesy:

1. Left side of the "W" -- extra yellow pixels
2. Bottom left tip of the "grey blob" (if you'd like to call it that) -- extra yellow pixels
3. Basically the whole top edge of the "grey blob" is pixelated and wrongly colored brown/orange.
4. Crazy bad bevel/shadowing on the "grey blob."
5. Bottom right tip of the "grey blob" -- extra yellow pixels
6. The Azeroth map is completely deformed!

Bad move, World of Raids. This logo choice does not represent your website well. Not only that, but it will look like junk on a t-shirt (if that's your plan...).

Sounds to me like most of you are very butthurt over the fact that your pathetic excuse for a logo didn't win. The fact is that the logo displayed deserved to win because it looks the best out of any of the submitted entries and your opinion doesn't matter to ANYONE at all. Saying that it "doesn't represent the site" or whatever is beyond ignorant. Seriously, where's the sportsmanship? You lost because your design was terrible, get over it.

1. The extra pixels are probably my fault from tweaking the glow color so that it looks more like the link colors than the orange it originally was.
2. Again, probably my fault.
3. Pretty easily fixed.
4. You didn't submit a logo, so I have no idea how "crazy good" you are to avoid making something "crazy bad." If you're going to criticize something a person did, give an example of how you do it better.
5. Yes, see 1 and 2.
6. No it's not.

From a design point of view this is worlds better and the design was very well executed. The winner of the contest has numerous technical and design errors. I'm not sure what WoR's criteria was for judging, but IMO, based on your design and execution, you should have placed above the winning submission.

I completely understand the desire to have a banner/logo that immediately lets the viewer know what site they're looking at, but don't use that logo.

I don't want to dissuade you from getting a new logo, but I hope you know there are plenty of other ways to let people know what your website is all about on top of having an effective logo.

For instance, the title of the homepage is:

"World of Raids | World of Warcraft News Guides Raid Strategies Guilds Forums."

Put a tagline in there instead of a list of words, and consider shortening it to WoR there instead of in the logo so that people will actually read the tagline ("WoR | Your source for everything WoW"). You can even throw that tagline below or next to the new logo to further communicate the point of the website.

The simple interface with basically no information about the website only works for sites that focus purely on content, like wowdb. For a site like this, a good logo is a step in the right direction, but I hope you won't stop there, and I really hope you won't use that logo. Just the fact that it was done in Photoshop and not Illustrator makes me sad.

(e) I love the Sgt's submission! Worlds better

His logo is great from a design point of view, yes. However, when a product manager who has seen the release of very successful products chooses a logo, and I agree with the choice, then I stand by that choice. The winning logo will likely go through multiple iterations until it's actually used.
