Update: WoWInsider also found that wowcataclysm.com expired the same day Blizzard filed the trademarks, and is now being held by GoDaddy -- the registrar that usually handles Blizzard domains.

Blizzard Trademarks Cataclysm

Posted Image

This week gets more and more interesting every day. First it was the Faction-Change service announcement, then the latest PTR build sheding light on the Crusaders' Coliseum raid bosses, and now news of Blizzard Entertainment filing trademarks for "Cataclysm." World of Warcraft: Cataclysm, anyone?

We've already speculated a bit about a Maelstrom expansion, and it looks like Blizzard is readying their ammunition to head into BlizzCon with guns blazing. Companies usually only tip their hand on a game title when they're ready to announce it, so whatever Cataclysm is, we'll surely find out at BlizzCon. Sony Online Entertainment did this with their EQ and EQ2 expansions a few weeks before announcing them, and Blizzard will likely follow suit by sharing Cataclysm -- whatever it may be -- with the world in August.

So, again... how does World of Warcraft: Cataclysm sound? And would this be related to the Maelstrom? The Sargeras sound clip from yesterday suggests he's already gone from Azeroth (and was trying to get summoned back), so it likely won't involve him. Unless, of course, he's the cause of the cataclysmic events in this expansion. Another hint that this will be Maelstrom-related is this entry on WoWWiki:

Quote from: WoWWiki (Source)

The Great Sundering, also known as simply the Sundering or the Cataclysm,WRPG 185, 211 was a world event which reshaped Azeroth approximately 10,000 years ago at the end of the War of the Ancients. This event was triggered due to the Well of Eternity being destroyed.

Prior to the Sundering, there was only one continent on Azeroth, referred to as Kalimdor. In the catastrophic explosion, eighty percent of the land mass was destroyed,W3Man #? leaving behind the major continents and scattered islands that are known today: Northrend, Kezan, the Eastern Kingdoms, and the remnant still referred to as Kalimdor.

The site of the Well of Eternity became a swirling vortex of power known as the Maelstrom.

At any rate, here are the three trademarks, which in some ways support this being World of Warcraft-related:

Maybe it will be the name of their new MMO?

Possibly. It will be a fun BlizzCon regardless though. I'm really looking forward to it. :)

I just kind of hope that they deviate from that list posted ages ago: http://wow.allakhaza...012268058738816

It's a little depressing knowing exactly where WoW is going and when it's going to definitively end, though I suppose more expansions past that list are always possible.

in the dragonlance series of books by margeret weis and tracy hickman the cataclysm was an event where the kingpriest proclaimed himself a god and got subsequently smited with a giant meteor which turned hi entire city into a MAELSTORM

Blizz could easily make a new expansion because, The Maelstrom has more lore than either northrend or the Kingdoms, I mean there is just so much more we can explore and more importantly kill. I mean i read up on that list that was posted pre bc and researched each zone and when i finished i could think of so many possibilities of bosses and such. I mean whatever BLizz is planning sure wont dissapoint.

I'm sorry to disappoint you but that list is proven to be a fake many times.

Interesting thought came to mind with the name. What if this is a Caverns of Time expansion that takes us back to the point of the cataclysm that broke apart Kalimdor?

like an entire expansion in the CoT? that could be interesting

i could see the inspiration for that tho

as i mentioned there is the dragonlance series yadayadayada and there is a book in it where the twins raistlin and camoron (moron on purpose by the authors) go back in time to a few months before the caaclysm and stay until right before it happens

They replaced the boring titles. There are probably around 100 titles now, supporting up to 5000 posts, with a special title for... well, I won't give away the post count required.

Indeed! Here are a few previews of titles (post counts required not included; order may not be the same either):

HE's your baby's daddy?!
Gahz'rilla
Certified Libram Farmer
Fear Ward? What's that?
Heart of Noxxion
Tempest Keep was merely a setback.
Didn't we cut off his head?
That cache wasn't very rare...
Is Jed Runewatcher up this time?

I tried to throw in some easter eggs that veteran players who have been around since release will recognize. Heart of Noxxion being one of them. ;)

Given the reckless and wild nature of the Goblins and Undermine, Undermine could be the first city with no sanctuary and be immersed in pvp, supporting an Alliance vs. Horde themed expansion that is highly likely. That is, if we see Kezan in the expansion.

Though the idea of an entire expansion in the time of the Sundering would be pretty cool as well. I think the time of the Third War would be more lore rich and interesting though. The climax of which though has already been realized in BC, so it's unlikely unfortunately.

From the changes with Wintergrasp, I don't think we'll see a capital city where horde and alliance can PvP freely. I love the idea, but the lag and constant complaints would be too much. Then again, if they sectioned it off, similar to Shattrath where Horde and Alliance were on elevated platforms, and everything above or below those platforms was free game, that would be neat.

actually it would be quite the opposite as the goblins are all about trade so they would liek as little violence as possible given that it could cause collateral damage and hurt their wealthy traders
