Crusaders' Coliseum Raid Encounter Previews

Yesterday's PTR build shed some more light on the Crusaders' Coliseum -- both the 5-player version and the raid version -- thanks to a few voiceovers added for the various participants. Below you can find some interesting notes about the audio, as well as boss abilities I've gathered from both the audio itself and through some analysis of the spell data and the announced encounters. Some of it just makes sense. Note that this news is extremely spoiler heavy so I suggest you not read it if you don't want the content spoiled!

I've only included the 25-player versions of the spells below. For a lot of the spells, there are versions for each type (10, 10-Heroic, 25, 25-Heroic). The order of these encounters isn't quite known yet, but based on the achievements this is likely similar to what you'll see. While you go through the raid, Tirion Fordring will announce each encounter, with various Alliance and Horde dignitaries watching on: Varian Wrynn, Jaina Proudmoore, Thrall, and Garrosh Hellscream.

An interesting note on the achievements is that the criteria of Call of the Crusade was changed to require defeating each "group" of bosses, so it's possible that loot is only rewarded after completing each group. Keep in mind that there may be more abilities than those listed; I didn't include those that aren't fairly obviously involved in an encounter, such as Slime Pool.

Beasts of Northrend

It's entirely possible that Gormok the Impaler is a separate encounter from Acidmaw and Dreadscale, with the changes to the Call of the Crusade achievement. For the moment, consider the encounters to work out like this: encounter 1 = Gormok the Impaler, encounter 2 = Acidmaw & Dreadscale, encounter 3 = Icehowl, all within the "Beasts of Northrend" group.

Lord Jaraxxus

This looks to be a fairly interesting encounter. What's known from the audio files is he spawns a "sister" during the encounter, as well as Infernal Volcanos that can spawn infernal adds. There are a few abilities that are likely used by the infernals, but I've included them in the general list for Jaraxxus for now. Jaraxxus also appears to be able to enslave players, but no real details are known on that at the moment. Once testing is available we'll no doubt find out more.

Faction Champions

For this encounter, there is some dialog between Tirion Fordring and either Varian Wrynn or Garrosh Hellscream, depending on the faction. You end up fighting a group of the other faction's NPCs and possibly Varian / Garrosh.

Introduction

Tirion Fordring - "The next battle will be against the Argent Crusade's most powerful knights! Only by defeating them will you be deemed worthy."

Alliance / Horde Intervene

Posted Image Garrosh Hellscream - "The Horde demands justice. We challenge the Alliance! Allow us to battle in place of your knights, paladin. We will show these dogs what it means to insult the Horde!"

Posted Image Varian Wrynn - "Our honor has been besmirched. They make wild claims and false accusations against us! I demand justice! Allow my champions to fight in place of your knights, Tirion. We challenge the Horde!"

Fight Begins

Tirion Fordring - "Very well, I will allow it. Fight with honor!"

Posted Image Garrosh Hellscream - "Show them no mercy, Horde champions. LOK'TAR OGAR!"

Posted Image Varian Wrynn - "Fight for the glory of the Alliance, heroes! Honor your king, and your people!"

Victory

Tirion Fordring - "A shallow and tragic victory. We are weaker as a whole from the losses suffered today. Who but the Lich King could benefit from such foolishness. Great warriors have lost their lives, and for what? The true threat looms ahead -- the Lich King awaits us all in death."

Twin Val'kyr - Edyis Darkbane & Fjola Lightbane

There's a good chance the twins will share HP since they share damage taken, and will also have a "power up" mechanic similar to Thaddius where they place Dark Essence or Light Essence on the raid. Regardless, this looks like it could be a very fun encounter, and they have a LOT of abilities.

Anub'arak

Anub'arak is back, as he's been resurrected by the Lich King. Prior to this encounter taking place, it seems that Arthas will appear in the arena. The explanation for why the floor is broken makes sense now; he likely thrusts Frostmourne into the ground -- shattering it -- and causing players to fall through into the cavern below.

The voiceover for Arthas isn't in yet, but Tirion comments in an "ArthasIntro" audio file: "Arthas! You are hopelessly outnumbered, lay down Frostmourne and I will grant you a just death." This is likely when Arthas comes back with something like "Okay." and breaks the floor.

Anub'arak will likely spawn Nerubian Burrower and Nerubian Ice Darter during the encounter. You can probably expect that killing ice darters will spawn Permafrost. He will also spawn Swarm Scarabs while submerged, based on the audio files.

http://www.worldofraids.com/images/guides/anubarak-s.jpg
Abilities
Leeching Swarm
Releases a swarm of insects that attack the caster's enemies, leeching 20% of each target's current health every 1 sec. A minimum of 500 health will be leeched. This effect is reduced when your health is low. Anub'arak casts this when he reaches 30% health. 3 minute duration on Leeching Swarm.
Nerubian Burrower
Spawns a Nerubian Burrower add.
Nerubian Ice Darter
Spawns a Nerubian Ice Darter add.
Permafrost
Freezes the ground in a small area, preventing most creatures from burrowing through it and reducing movement speed over the area by 80%.
Pursued by Anub'arak
Anub'arak is pursuing you.
Pursuing Spikes
Fires a spike through the floor, impaling all targets within 4 yards, dealing 2828 to 3172 damage and knocking them up in the air. This attack ignores armor. Triggers Impale every 1 sec. for 9 sec. Likely targeted at the person pursued by Anub'arak.
Submerge
Burrow into the ground. Cannot be cast on Permafrost.
Summon Scarab
Triggers Summon Scarab every 4 sec. for 1 minute.

Sounds

The voice at the end of the file that says "You have failed me Varimathras." is Sargeras!

No it is Sargeras hence why the sound file is called Sargeras.

Does anyone else notice similarities between Tirion's dialogue and Dumbledor from Harry Potter? O_o

This won't be as disappointing as people are claiming. I think this is refreshing raid and has potential to cut down on length issues. The Alliance vs. Horde fight sounds fun, and lends more credence to my strong belief that the next expansion focuses on the Alliance vs. Horde.

I think it would be even cooler if during the Faction Champions encounter if your faction's champion tanked the (otherwise undamageable) other champion (Garrosh tanks Varian for horde and vice-versa) and you have to kill the other Alliance champions before a certain time (like make the champions give a damage buff to the other champions including the Leader, and once all champions are dead, you can work on the enemy leader) and at the very end of the encounter (like 1%), the lead champion mortally wounds yours (so either side the encounter ends in both of them dying) Of course this will never happen, but I can dream right? (as a side note, I hope they do it this way so Varian and Garrosh get to go at it like they couldn't in the Violet Citadel in the 3.1 Trailer)

But this is definitely a shot in the arm for BOTH the Horde and Alliance, losing Garrosh and Varian (arguably the most brash generals for both sides in Northrend, but also arguably two of the most successful). Thrall will have his hands full dealing with the loss, and so will Prince Anduin. And then they have to promote generals in their place for the final push. Thrall will have an easier time than Anduin (since Varok Saurfang [ YES, Saurfang] is already there and the second in command, however Anduin will become king unless there is another Regent in his place since he is 12 now correct?) Either way, this is huge Alliance vs Horde wise. But this also gets the two biggest reasons the Horde and Alliance can't work together out of the way and hopefully peace will ensue.

I honestly doubt Varian or Garrosh would fight personally here, though it would be a really interesting plot twist. Just doesn't seem right to have the Alliance losing their main leader that has been around only for this expansion. On the other hand, it could lead to an even more interesting situation, but since Tirion, Thrall and Jaina are also watching the fight, I doubt they would just let Garrosh or Varian die. To the poster above, I think Anduin is already 14 - 15 if we take into account he was 10 when WoW started.

Also, remember it seems Varimathras is there, somewhere. The question is, disguised as whom?

The "Mystery" Sargeras voice at the end of the sound clips is from the horde side of the Battle of Undercity quest. When Varimathras is summoning Sargeras and is defeated. So it has nothing to do with 3.2 or the new raid.

Didn't knew, never did the Battle for Undercity questline with an horde character. This should also be specified in the frontpage. Anyway, after listening to the audio files, it seems both Varian and Garrosh are still alive after the twin val'kyr are defeated.

But that's in their faction's version of the encounter. It would be really weird for them to both be alive even though one of them was killed in the arena. But definitely Blizz territory bringing people back 'till the character finally dies of old age (lol).

I assume that at least one per side would die at some point. And judging from the observers here, those possible for picking off ought to be:
- Garrosh
- Thrall
- Jaina
- Varian

Now, if I may make an educated guess, it would happen in one of these two ways.
Either Thrall and Jaina die, or Varian and Garrosh die.
Why? Because Thrall and Jaina serve the same role in the different sides, as the wise people standing behind, thinking over their every move to minimize the damage. Also, Varian and Garrosh serve the same role as the hotheads that bicker all day and night about who has the biggest cojones or the shiniest sports cars.... er... wolves.

In the case of Jaina and Thrall, Varian and Garrosh would probably have to stop their bickering and actually start doing something right for once. And if I had to take a guess as to how they would die, they would most likely try doing the right thing and save someone or the other from an impending danger, knowing the possible outcomes. (Lich King? Sargeras? What do I know?)

And in the case of Varian and Garrosh dying (oh god I hope they die, they whine all the freaking time... WAAHH WAHH WE'RE BETTER WAHH), they would probably go in and get themselves killed trying to prove that one or the other side is stronger, and realizing in the final moment that "aww, bugger... maybe this whole argument wasn't such a good idea" and then there would most likely be some sort of honoring of the dead heroes and Thrall would deliver a speech of how things could have gone differently.

You get the point.

Seriously.....when the hell is Thrall just gonna finally whip around and bitch slap Garrosh for being such a disrespectful little prick. He needs to man (orc?) up and show him who's warchief.
