A single riding crop for all mounts would definitely be a good thing to keep around still.
If they switch it to 1 per mount as was the plan,,, would cost some of us a boat load of extra riding crops to make. (primal might, dust, leather, small shard)

If your mount interface simply had 1 slot to put the riding crop in, that'd fix that.
Or simply add a 7th glyph slot for everyone level 30 and up, and allow us to enchant that with a 10% mounted speed glyph.

It would also be nice to be able to just "dismount" in the middle of a flightpath.
This would save so much time!! and put those parachute cloaks finally to a good and useful purpose.

This is a cool idea. We'll look into it although depending on how the class team handled the removal of poisons, we may or may not be able to do this as a Feat. (src)
What kind of sad rogue would not have his poison skill maxed?
Or cooking for that matter.

That is actually a really good suggestion. Saves people butt load of cash and still have the feature in place. I kindof like my Skybreaker Wip. I know it acts the same as a riding crop but still quite useful.

Doesn't the crop also work with crusader?
Or, well probably not.

No it doesn't. The 20% increase in riding speed from Crusader Aura overrides all Trinkets/Enchants from your currently equiped gear. A good way to test this is to put on a Riding Crop, go into a BG with a Pally in your group have them turn on their Crusader Aura. Follow them for a bit, move out of their aura and notice the decrease in speed. Then run back in the aura and notice the increase in speed.

Would still be useful for a paladin to have trinket though, as it can take half a second to switch or use the skill after mounting

I would simply make the riding crop into a buff item, usable while on mount.
You mount, use your riding crop for the speed buff and off you go.

Since mounting up acts like a spell, why not just add an extra inscription slot that is for a riding crop only? This way it would simply just work as an inscription.

I recall a while back that a Carrot on a Stick tradeskill spell was found, with the mats of Simple Wood, some form of thread, and a Golden Sansam. The Sansam's world graphic is of a carrot in the dirt, so it was literally a carrot, a string, and a stick. Not sure which class it was intended to have make it.
