Im kind of confused on the spirit talent in the arcane tree. Do mages actually need spirit now? Or is it just a stat that could be used but is not really required?

Yes, spirit is becoming much more important than in TBC.

Can't recall the workshop, but Devs have stated spirit will play a much larger roll for everyone. No more stacking all +dmg gems etc..

With glyph, mage armor, and added spirit, mages have a ridiculous amount of regen capability.

*edit - found one Blue post reference from 09/10/08

"Mana regen in raid Nobody seems to be having problems with mana in Naxx right now (maybe Ret pallies), but I think that's because regen is too good across the board. I wouldn't use that experience (yet) to determine that you have enough Spirit. Most casters are going to have a lot of Spirit on their gear, but we'll see if we can get you (Druids) some more crit."

Way off. It's about the same as it was in TBC. Stack hit to the cap then straight spell damage. If you're having mana issues, int is better to stack than spirit due to how the replenishment mechanic works.

The above poster is right. Just keep this blue post (http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html?topicId=13129077831&pageNo=2&sid=1#21) in mind. Mana regen might be changing in the future so that at some point stacking int might not be the best regen.

Mages need a spirit --> (some other stat) talent, but for some reason blizzard doesn't want to "homogenize (sp?)" the classes anymore than they are already are. I don't see how this one talent would make them all anymore of the same.

Int also helps Evocation. Spirit does not.
Spirit is still a filler stat for mages.

Spirit is like block value for death knights. Completely and utterly useless unless out of combat. Only spec it has any value in is Arcane, but, who can raid Arcane and still stay competitive DPS wise on a decent length fight?

lol ya mages do NOT need spirit unless arcane spec, but blizzard chooses to only have one viable spec right now. Rip arcane

I know everyone says not to, but I'm going deep arcane for lvling.

Spirit on gear is good but its still not the best stat for Arcane. And please dont waste talents on additional spirit. Its just not worth it.

I play an Arcane mage and I have lots of spirit gear. I dont necessarily look for spirit, but so far most of my upgrades had some spirit on the gear.

At level 80 I may have to switch to frost if the Arcane dps isnt there. However at level 77 I can sustane over 1400 dps in level 80 instances(bosses level 80-halls of lightning, stone--I would probably miss a lot in old strat). I suspect it would be higher if I had my hit maxed for my level. I am sure I am short by 50 or so. We will see how the dps for arcane pans out at level 80.

Arcane leveling is fun and ez. I am sure frost is just as ez.

you might have to switch to frost? does no one pay attention? THE ONLY dps spec is 0/53/18 Frost fire. If that is not your spec you lose, it is sad but true. I want to see blizzard fix arcane. It had a full 3 weeks of being on par pre wotlk before being kicked to the gutter again. I am not talking about just using arcane spells, I want to see arc hybrid viability.
